NEHS Fitness & Wellness

What is the Health & Wellness SLC?

Health & Wellness is a three-year program that introduces students to the various careers available in the sports and wellness industries. This SLC will be a split in two portions (physical activity and health/science). Physical activity courses will be athletic based classes and the health/science courses will be taught in a traditional classroom setting. This SLC has a mandatory 4th science course (Anatomy) instead of the option of a 4th math course.

In this program students main focus will be on the 6 Dimensions of Wellness (Physical Wellness, Emotional Wellness, Intellectual Wellness, Interpersonal/Social Wellness, Environmental Wellness, and Spiritual Wellness). Emphasis is placed on healthy lifestyles which will focus on fitness and nutrition. Students will not only learn about the content through classroom assignments, text and lecture but also through actual physical performance that includes Individual, Dual and Team Sports, Strength and Conditioning/ Speed Agility, Outdoor Pursuits and Lifetime Leisure Skills, Adventure Activities, Dance and Rhythmic Skills to name a few.

Internships and student projects are also an integral part of the program. All students will be able to obtain First Aid and CPR/AED certification. During the three-year program, students will have an opportunity to take several industry certification tests that will prepare them for the workforce (personal training certification, police, fire and military departments, EMT Paramedics) and/or college ready majors (physical education, athletic training/sports medicine, nutrition, physical therapist, social work, occupational therapist).
