Math Department

Department of Mathematics

Dept Chair: Crystal Green

The primary goals of the Mathematics Department are as follows:

Students will:

  • Become mathematical problem solvers
  • Learn to communicate mathematically
  • Learn to reason mathematically
  • Learn to value mathematics
  • Become confident in their own ability

Secondary Goals:

All students’ mathematical learning will embody the concepts that engagement in mathematics is essential, and that decision-making, risk-taking, cooperative work, perseverance, self-assessment, and self-confidence are frequently keys to success.
All students will be evaluated using a diversity of assessment tools and strategies to provide multiple indicators of the quality of every child’s mathematical learning and of overall program effectiveness.

Dept Courses:

Algebra 1
Algebra 1 topics include recognizing and developing patterns using tables, graphs and equations. In addition, students will explore operations on algebraic expressions, apply mathematical properties to algebraic equations. Students will solve problems using equations, graphs and tables to investigate linear relationships.

Algebra 2
Algebra 2 is designed to build on algebraic and geometric concepts. Throughout the course, Common Core standards are taught and reinforced as the student learns how to apply the concepts in real-life situations. It develops advanced Algebra skills such as Linear Equations, Relations and Functions, Quadratic Functions, Polynomials and Polynomial Functions, and Inverses and Radical Functions. The prerequisite for this course is Algebra 1.

Geometry
This course is designed to emphasize the study of the properties and applications of common geometric figures in two and three dimensions.  It includes the study of transformations and right triangle trigonometry. Inductive and deductive thinking skills are used in problem solving situations, and applications to the real world are stressed.  It also emphasizes writing proofs to solve (prove) properties of geometric figures. The prerequisite for this course is Algebra 1.

PreCalculus
A detailed study of the mathematics needed for calculus. Concepts are presented and explored from symbolic, graphical, and numerical perspectives. Basic concepts covered include polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, complex numbers, linear systems, numerical patterns, sequences and series. The prerequisites for this course are Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry.

Statistics
This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include: the measures of central tendency, standard deviation, combinations and permutations, probability, sampling, and various distributions. Emphasis is on applications of statistical concepts. The prerequisites for this course are Algebra 1 and Algebra 2.

Calculus
Course Description: This course is designed to provide an understanding of one-variable calculus. The topics included in this course are limits, derivatives, applications of derivatives, integrals, and applications of integrals.
